Is there really a google blacklist?

google blacklistIs the Google blacklist for real or is it just a bluff? Its a dangerous question to ask, possibly not worth the risk for many SEO experts, but the truth is it may all be a massive bluff on google’s part.

The theory is (that Google wants you to believe) is that Google algorithms detect when you post tons of backlink spam, and your site risks getting blacklisted. The reason I think it’s a bluff is simple, it can’t be that simple without hurting the sites that don’t engage in link blasting the web. If it were that easy, people could target competition websites and just simply run some backlink software on them to get them out of their way. There is also the thought that too many backlinks in too short a time results in blacklisting. If this was true, then how can a celebrity make a page about something they’re doing and the next day it be on page one with thousands and thousands of people linking to it talking about it? They’ll start a brand new website for an event and the next day have an unbelievable number of sites linking to it from people talking about it, so too many backlinks in too short a time can’t be true. If it is true, then “too many” must be a number so high that you or I couldn’t possibly reach it on a daily basis.

Sites do get penalized!

Don’t get me wrong, sites do get penalized, my hosting sites list got penalized just a day before writing this. Its a risk we all take when doing SEO, the risk that you’ll be on top just long enough to fall off. It’s not a blacklist though, google isn’t looking for “maximums” or “limits”, they’re looking for patterns. Specifically, when a site gets right to the border between the top pages of google, it will randomly disappear from rankings for a day, or randomly drop a couple of pages before moving up a couple of spots. What google is doing is testing you, checking to see if you build an unusual number of backlinks or make a bunch of site changes when you see those rankings falter. If you overcompensate, they know you’re trying too hard and they penalize you 50 spots. Thats all the google penalty is, 50 spots. My site yesterday went from number 8 to number 58. Now it’s around 50 and I’ll keep at it like normal and boost it back to page one.

The important thing to remember is this- don’t be afraid to make a lot of backlinks, just don’t follow a pattern. Change things up. You aren’t going to get blacklisted for making a few hundred or a few thousand backlinks over a couple of days. You will get penalized though if google detects a pattern with other sites doing the same in the same places, or with you over compensating when rankings drop. My site was penalized because when it hit page one it was at the bottom, I did more than usual for backlinks, they detected the over compensation. A mistake I will remember. If I had just continued at the same pace, I’d be higher in the listings. Continue at the same pace, slow and steady wins the race, but don’t follow linking patterns and don’t post links where a ton of other spammers have already posted them.

Where do I get good links? Blacklist or not, I don’t want to lose 50 spots!

That’s actually a lot more simple than you may think. All over the web there are sites like Weebly, Yola, Blogger, HubPages, etc where you can make free web pages and sites. All you do is sign up, make a mini site related to the content of your main site, and then post links to your main site you want rankings for. Then ping the page, run it through an indexer, and move on to the next mini site. Making blogs about your site and keeping up with them every week or two with new posts is also a great way to link build. For some free pingers, indexers, and other free tools, check out the Awesome Free Tools tab at the top. You can find all of em on google pretty easily, but unlocking the page makes me a few cents, and these quality posts are worth that, right? lol.

As always thanks for reading, if you have any thoughts on the google blacklist, or have noticed any google trends that could help shed light on Google’s mysterious “Algorithm” feel free to comment. Like, share, etc. It’s what awesome people would do :D
